Your garage door's safety reversal system is one of its most critical features. This system ensures that if the door encounters an obstruction while closing, it automatically reverses direction to prevent injury or damage.
Since 1993, federal law has required all garage door openers to include auto-reverse mechanisms. However, these systems can fail over time due to wear, misalignment, or sensor issues. Regular testing is essential to ensure your family's safety.
Modern garage doors use photo-eye sensors located near the bottom of the door tracks. To test them:
1. Clear the doorway of all objects and people 2. Close the door using your remote or wall button 3. Wave an object (like a broom handle) through the photo-eye beam 4. Observe the door - it should immediately reverse
If the door doesn't reverse, your sensors need attention. Check for: - Dirty lenses (clean with a soft cloth) - Misaligned sensors (LED lights should be steady, not blinking) - Wiring issues or obstructions
This tests the mechanical auto-reverse function:
1. Place a 2x4 board flat on the ground where the door meets the floor 2. Close the garage door using your opener 3. The door should reverse upon contact with the board
Important: If the door doesn't reverse within 2 seconds of touching the board, the opener force settings need adjustment. This is a job for a professional technician.
We recommend testing your safety systems monthly. Mark it on your calendar or set a phone reminder. A few minutes each month can prevent serious accidents.
